Curriculum

At King’s Juniors, we offer a broad and balanced curriculum to boys and girls which aims to stimulate interest in all areas as well as fostering good work and study habits which will serve the pupils well in later life.

The programme includes:

English, Mathematics, Science, Geography
History, French, Art Design and Technology
Music, Information and Communications Technology
Religious Education, Personal, Social and Health Education
Physical Education, Field Games
Swimming (at Macclesfield Leisure Centre)

All classes follow a published timetable which is sent home to parents on the first day of the school year.  A homework timetable is also sent home.

In Years 3 and 4, most subjects are delivered by the Form Teacher.  Here expectations and good work habits are established with particular emphasis being placed on the laying of sound foundations in English and Mathematics.

In Years 5 and 6 whilst most subjects continue to be taught by the class teacher, there is access toa wider variety of specialist teaching areas which has the effect of introducing them to the more mobile approach found in the Senior School.

Children are encouraged to take an active part in their lessons, to express opinions, to ask questions and to develop the right attitude towards learning and the application of knowledge.

Setting

The children are placed in sets in English (Years 5 and 6) and Mathematics (all years) to enable each child to be taught at a level appropriate to his/her ability in these vital areas of the curriculum.  Other subjects are taught within the mixed-ability classes.

Homework

Year 3 pupils are given homework on three nights each week, Year 4 have four 30-minute homeworks per week and Years 5 and 6 have homework each evening (maximum one hour).

We also expect children to read each night with a suitable type of book being selected once the teacher has had a chance to identify the child’s appropriate level.  We encourage parents to listen to their child reading as well as taking the opportunity to read out loud to them.  The Reading Record forms part of the Junior Department Planner and there is an expectation that this is signed each evening.
