The Big Band has gone from strength to strength in recent years under the directorship of Ron Darlington, professional jazz trumpeter, assisted by Gareth Brown, the school's brass teacher.
The standard it achieves is such that the band have twice been asked to perform at concerts organised by the Wigan Youth Jazz Orchestra - the only school ensemble invited. Members of the King's School Big Band have been invited to join Wigan Youth and one member took part in the Jazz Mentoring Scheme at this year's International Jazz Festival.
The band has a busy schedule every year and is committed to fundraising; over the last few years it has raised over £20,000 for charity.
Since Ron's retirement in 2005, the band has been fortunate to work under another jazz professional, saxophonist Kevin Dearden. The training band, now known as the Jazz Band, continues to thrive under the leadership of Gareth Brown.
